Peacock launches nationwide on July 15 with a content lineup of sports, late night shows, scripted and unscripted series, movies, and originals. One fan favorite show, The Office, will join the lineup in January 2021. While the streaming service plans to promote the addition, a reboot of the show is not in the works.
In an interview with Deadline, Bill McGoldrick, President of Original Content, NBCUniversal Entertainment Networks and Direct to Consumer shared that there are no plans to give The Office the same treatment as Punky Brewster or Saved by the Bell, two series that will be getting remade as originals for Peacock.
“Because it does not launch until January, we have not
talked specifically about The Office reboots for Peacock;
we’ve talked about things we can do to support The Office once
it gets to our service but a reboot has not come up specifically for
Peacock,” McGoldrick told Deadline.
When asked about a potential reunion episode, McGoldrick
said “Lots of those ideas have been bandied about with people internally and
with Greg Daniels and people associated with the show. As you can imagine,
there are lots of creative ideas, we haven’t landed at any one right now.”
The series will likely see a reunion special like the one planned with the cast of Friends for HBO Max, or a one time episode like the socially distanced episode of Parks and Rec on NBC which raised money for COVID-19 relief efforts.
In the meantime, you can continue watching The Office on Netflix. The on-demand platform has rights to the show until it lands on Peacock in 2021.
